ABOUT THE EUROPEAN SPACE MEDICINE NETWORK

The European Space Medicine Network is a collaboration of European universities, medical centers and space-oriented organizations. Its mission is to advance understanding of how space travel and habitation on other bodies within the Solar System affect human physiology, and to optimize astronaut health under these extreme conditions.

Through a multidisciplinary approach, the network conducts functional studies using experimental and clinical models on Earth (known as terrestrial analogs) as well as low-Earth orbit experiments and AI-driven in silico studies. These efforts aim to understand how changes in gravity, radiation exposure, and other conditions during spaceflight or on the Moon and Mars affect human immune responses, metabolism, musculoskeletal integrity, and cardiovascular function.

In addition, the network actively develops preventive and therapeutic strategies to mitigate spaceflight-associated pathological processes, including immunosuppression and accelerated aging.

Research focus: Endocrine and immune interactions, with a particular emphasis on thyroid disorders.

Shih-Chin (James) Cheng

Research focus: Trained immunity, immunometabolism, and host–pathogen interactions to understand mechanisms underlying infectious, inflammatory, and immune-mediated diseases.
